Code of Ethics
- To assist all Canadians to live an active healthy lifestyle, and embrace a high level of fitness education standards both Provincially and Nationally.
- To provide opportunities for education, communication, and professional development in the area of fitness* and health.
- To develop, implement and promote a comprehensive fitness* leader certification program.
- To work with key partners for the advancement of active healthy living.
*OFC definition of fitness is as follows: Fitness includes not only physiological fitness, but also the concept of active healthy living, where physical activity is seen as a vehicle for personal growth, a major contributor to physical, mental and social well being and improved quality of life. (Adopted June 1990)
ONTARIO FITNESS COUNCIL’S PHILOSOPHY:
The Ontario Fitness Council is an organization of individuals and organizations with a professional or personal interest in fitness and in the well being of society.
We, the members, recognize the importance of a positive dynamic state of well being, that integrates the body, mind and spirit.
We are dedicated to fitness excellence. We aim to:
· act with integrity at all times
· recognize our moral and social responsibilities and be willing to act accordingly
· make an extra effort to use our skills and resources where they are most needed
· strive for excellence in everything we do
As an OFC Certified Professional Fitness Leader, I am guided by the Ontario Fitness Council’s principles of professional conduct, whether working with clients, the public, or other fitness and health professionals.
CODE OF ETHICS:
Principle 1: Actively support and promote the goals and philosophy of the Ontario Fitness Council.
Principle 2: Provide and deliver instructional/trainer services in a safe, professional manner and exercising professional judgement in the best interest of the client/s, at a level consistent with his or her scope of practice ensuring that client/s needs are met.
Principle 3: Maintain professional competence by continually upgrading education and knowledge in regards to the latest research in health and fitness and by understanding its practical application.
Principle 4: Respect the autonomy, individuality and dignity of each client/s and provide instruction/training with respect for human rights and without discrimination.
Principle 5: Uphold and enhance public well-being, appreciation and trust for the health and fitness industry by providing a high level of excellence in both professional skills and knowledge by meeting or exceeding the standards of the OFC.
Principle 6: Preserve the confidentiality of client information acquired in the course of his or her professional practice, as well as comply with all applicable business, employment and/or copyright laws and regulations.
Principle 7: To achieve the best possible outcome for a client/s, understand the roles and contributions of other medical or health care providers and consult with and/or refer to them as appropriate.
Principle 8: Establish and maintain clear professional boundaries.
